Why be a wedding videographer?
I had a few people come up to me at a recent wedding and say "how can you film a wedding? I'd be too stressed!"
In all honesty, I enjoy them. Maybe it comes from my experience within the corporate world of filming events and doing livestreams. I understand the importance of pre-production prior to the filming. Then, in the moment, it's just about trying to keep a level head and not let the attendees see anything that isn’t quite going to plan – if it isn’t.
There's something wonderful about being trusted to do your job without any amount of micromanagement, though some people will focus on the large amount of pressure involved. In some jobs I might want to be guided by the client, but with weddings, I’m happy to be entrusted to capture their day in the way they intended.
Not to mention the amazing people I get to meet, be it the couples themselves or their friends and family. It feels like such a privilege to be a part of their day, and generally speaking everyone is always in good spirits.
In my experience, the things you will fret about on the filming day or in the edit – to the untrained eye – no one will notice. Ultimately, the couple just want to relive their day in your video format.
My advice is to just have fun when it comes to filming a wedding. Have a boogie on the dance floor, have a laugh with the couple, chat to guests to put them at ease, and you'll be fine!
